With the popularity of TV and the PC, let alone the Internet, children appear to have given up on enjoying books. Sadly, the same is apparently true for grownups as well. While children are still encouraged to do some reading in school, grownups are likely to watch TV until they go to bed. With such sorry examples, how do we encourage our kids to savor the thrills of reading?

SavingsAce has documented a few essential ideas to create enthusiastic readers without really turning their world upside down. Before you read these suggestions, do understand that punishing them won't help cultivate solid reading habits. In reality, it may have the completely opposite effect.

- Begin young. As parents, we sometimes err by assuming that our child should be presented with books only once she's ready to read on her own. SavingsAce acknowledges that this isn't true. It's a fact that babies who are read to, from books at night or otherwise, grow up to be better readers than children who aren't. The earlier you familiarize your kids with the concept of books, and show them the fun and learning that can come from these books via reading, the better.

- Interest. No one likes to do things that aren't interesting. That holds particularly true for kids. If you support reading by tapping into the child's interests, you may be able to reach the preferred outcomes much faster. So if your daughter enjoys adventure, show her some adventure tales; if your youngster enjoys machines, then a story about Mighty Machines will work better.

- Interactive. According to SavingsAce, it's critical that you keep the reading sessions engaging. So while the initial step would be to read to your son, the succeeding step is to read with him. Soon enough, your tyke will be reading independently.

- Schedule. Allocate a set time for reading. This time should depend entirely on the maturity and the program of the child. While bedtime is a good time to persuade kids to read, after-school and pre-dinner periods are other good times as well.

 - Age-specific. It's critical that the stories that you choose for your kid should be age-appropriate, in terms of not only message but also amount. It's a fact that younger children have a lower attention span compared to older ones. Giving your twenty-month-old an exciting story intended for a 5-year-old could overwhelm your child and create an indifference towards reading.

While these suggestions from SavingsAce work well, it's also factual that every youngster has his or her own individuality. So, while one kid may react very well to your attempts, another may show a frostier response. Try to work with the child's comfort levels and further reading without making it a job for the child. It's also fundamental that you practice what you preach. So switch off that computer every so often, and discover a book for some awesome reading!
